The Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) is a comprehensive numerical model, spanning the range of altitude from the Earth's surface to the thermosphere. The development of WACCM is an inter-divisional collaboration that unifies certain aspects of the upper atmospheric modeling of HAO, the middle atmosphere modeling of ACD, and the tropospheric modeling of CGD, using the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) as a common numerical framework.
Users who wish to publish science with CESM1(WACCM) are encouraged to use a scientifically validated configuration. For most users, this will mean using CESM1.0, which was used for all CESM runs done for CMIP5. Users should select the latest incremental update (i.e. CESM1.0.6) described in the CESM1.0 release notes. See the Code Release and Tools page for details. Currently validated configurations of WACCM incorporate CAM4 physics in the lower atmosphere and should be referenced in publications as CESM1(WACCM), as described in:
Marsh, D. R., M.J. Mills, D.E. Kinnison, J.-F. Lamarque, N. Calvo, and L. M. Polvani, Climate change from 1850 to 2005 simulated in CESM1(WACCM), 73727391, Journal of Climate, 26(19), doi:10.1175/JCLI-D-12-00558.1, 2013.
Support for running CESM is available on the DiscussCESM bulletin board, where users request assistance with science and runtime issues. The bulletin board includes a WACCM support forum section. The announcements section of the forum contains a number of guides of general use to WACCM users, including:
Users are encouraged to participate in meetings of the CCSM WACCM Working Group and to sign up for our email list.
