CSM b006 Synopsis:
CSM b006 is a 130 year transient increasing CO2 simulation.
The simulation was performed in Japan through a collaboration between NCAR and the Central Research Institute of the Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), based in Tokyo, Japan. CRIEPI provided the financial support for computer time as well as technical assistance. The model integration was performed on a 32-processor SX-4 supercomputer at the NEC Laboratory in Fuchu, with assistance from NEC's U.S. subsidiary, HNSX Supercomputers . The Sony Corporation also provided a new high-density tape drive used by CRIEPI to store data and ship it to NCAR for archival on the mass storage system.
The April 1997 NCAR Science Briefing describes this highly successful collaborative experiment in greater detail.
The run was initialized from year 15 of the b003 300 year CSM control run.
For the first 10 year (years 15-24), the CO2 level was held constant at the present day CO2 level (355ppm) used in the b003 control run) to ensure that the climate of the model had not been altered by the small numerical changes resulting from the port of the code to the NEC SX-4/32 .
At year 25, a 1% per year increase in the CO2 level was
initiated. CO2 Doubling was achieved in year 0095 and tripling
occured at in year 0135. The integration was halted at the end of
December of year 145.

Comparable data from the control case will be found in /HECHT/GLOBAL/D02L45T2/csm-b003/ncdf/cmip2_diag_control.nc /HECHT/GLOBAL/D02L45T2/csm-b003/ncdf/cmip2_prog_control.nc All four of the files were provided to CMIP2. contents of diag file: meridional overturning streamfunctions, northward heat transport. contents of prog file: vertically integrated mass transport streamfunction, the temperature and salinity fields, and the bathymetry. Warning: There was a bug in the calculation of the "Total" entry in the northward heat transport (which goes by the name "Tttn_basins"). The "Eddy Advection" has been added in twice. To get the total transport one must either take the sum of "Total Advection" and "Total Diffusion", or, equivalently, take the difference of "Total" and "Eddy Advection". |
