Models used:

  • the NCAR CSM (global) Ocean Model, NCOM_1.2 + mods
  • the NCAR CSM Flux Coupler, cpl-4.alpha.1

    Synopsis:
    This case was a standard ocn+ice spinup run for lower resolution models. The ocn and ice were run at (nominal) 3x3 degree resolution, while the atm and lnd models were run at T31. Case g008 is a companion run to case g006, which ran at a higher resolution -- (nominal) 2x2 degrees in the ocn and ice models, and T42 in the atm and lnd models. The data file atmosphere model provided the coupler with daily average fields from an uncoupled CCM3 run. The ice and ocean models were essentially those presented at the May 1996 CSM Workshop in Breckenridge, but do have some improvements. The ocean was run for 50 years in accelerated mode and 10 years in synchronous mode. This is equivalent to over 500 years of spinup for deep ocean tracer fields. Case g008 provided the intial conditions for fully coupled case b004.

    Computer Resources:
    When the ocean code ran in accelerated mode (years 1 thru 49), 1.1 CPU hour per simulated year was required (on a Cray C-90 with a 4.17 nano-second clock). When the ocean code ran in synchronous mode (years 50 thru 60), 3.4 CPU hours per simulated year were required. In either case, about 20 mega-words of main memory were required.
