Multi-decadal variability in the North Atlantic jet stream

Lead: Isla Simpson [islas@ucar.edu]
Investigations into the predictability of multi-decadal variability in the North Atlantic jet stream and its links with sea surface temperature variability with a view to understanding the discrepancy between models and observations in variability of the North Atlantic jet stream. Much greater multi-decadal variability in the North Atlantic jet stream in late winter has been observed over the last century than is simulated in GCM's. I will investigate the extent to which the variability is represented in the initialized decadal prediction ensemble and determine whether it displays any indications of predictability for the North Atlantic zonal winds and any relation to the SST variability.
