Tropical teleconnections to the Arctic

Co-Author: James Brooks
The tropical teleconnection to the Antarctic climate, especially with West Antarctica and the Peninsula region, is well documented from several key studies; ENSO events are found to reinforce particular Southern Annular Mode (SAM) phases. The teleconnection with the Arctic climate is less well documented, with only a handful studies so far, all displaying vague results. This study will look to compare different atmospheric and oceanic processes in order to analyse what happens in the Arctic in response to changes/events in the Tropics. For example, reanalysis data and large ensemble model simulation data will be used to better understand the tropical teleconnection with the Arctic, and also to enhance knowledge regarding Antarctica and temperature extremes.
