  • 2017 Winter Working Groups

The Winter working groups will take place February - 3 March, 2017 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO.

December 2015

  • AMWG meeting (Feb 8-11): request for abstracts

    Dear AMWG,

Our Winter AMWG meeting is scheduled from Feb/8/2016 (pm) - Feb/10/2016 (noon) which is immediately followed by a ‘mini-CESM’ meeting, taking place on Feb/10 (pm) and Feb/11/2016 (all day). This is not far away and so we are putting out the call for AMWG presentations. As always talks on all subjects are encouraged, but priority will be given to:

    -CAM5+ development activities.
-Evaluation of simulations from recent model versions
    -Novel model validation methods

The format will be AGU-type talks, 12/3mins talk/questions.

Note that all CESM working groups will be meeting during the same week, and will come together for joint sessions on Feb/10 (afternoon) and Feb/11. All working group attendees are encouraged to attend. It will be a kind of mini-Breckenridge format to discuss CESM2 developments & evaluations, and the cross working group collaborations. The joint sessions will help prepare the release of CESM2 in June 2016 and examine initial pre-industrial coupled simulation in order to aid the ongoing CMIP6 experiments.

AMWG will meet for 2 days, which includes a 0.5 day joint AMWG/WACCM/Chem-Clim session (morning of 2/10/2016). Given the large volume of talk requests in recent years, the very busy schedule and the need for more time to discuss CAM5.5 simulations we might need to consider the addition of a poster session. Please provide us feedback as to whether this would be a useful change to the program.

With that in mind please include with your talk requests a title, a very short abstract (1 or 2 paragraphs max) and whether you would prefer a talk only, poster only or either a talk or a poster.

Please submit your requests as soon as possible (via email to rneale@ucar.edu) and in any case no later then ** December, 30, 2015 **.

We are looking forward to seeing you in February next year!

    AMWG co-chairs
Peter Caldwell, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory/DOE
    Christiane Jablonowski, University of Michigan
    Rich Neale, NCAR

  • CESM Tutorial 2016

    Dear all,

The CESM Tutorial is scheduled for 8 - 12 August 2016 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. The application process will open in early January and will remain open for two months.

The tutorial will consist of 1) lectures on simulating the climate system, and 2) practical sessions on running CESM, modifying components, and analyzing data. It is targeted at the graduate student level, though we will aim for a mix of graduate students, postdocs, and early career research scientists and faculty. We can accept a maximum of 80 students with partial financial support for some students.

    Thank you,
    Barbara Ballard

  • CESM Working Group Meetings in 2016

    Dear all,

We would like to draw your attention to how the 2016 CESM Working Groups winter meetings will be structured. In order to facilitate discussions on the status of CESM2 before its release, we are planning to have all working groups meet during the week of 8-12 February. The current plan is for each group to have their individual meeting Monday through mid-day Wednesday. Each working group will decide, within that window, what is the most appropriate length for their respective agendas. Note that this likely means that meetings will be spread across several campuses. The afternoon of Wednesday and all of Thursday will be spent in Center Green on presentations and discussions of all relevant aspects of CESM2. The purpose is to identify strengths and weaknesses, with the goal of fixing major issues before the planned CESM2 release in June 2016. Coupled simulations with the interim CESM2 version will be made available (on Yellowstone) for analysis at least a month before the meeting. These simulations will not be released, and so results from their analysis must be seen as intermediate and cannot be used for publications.

Planning for this meeting will begin in November, so please mark your calendars and stay tuned.

    Best regards,

    Jean-Francois Lamarque

    CESM Chief Scientist

  • Final recommendation for CAM5.5

Following the original panel recommendation in February 2015 concerning the choice of physics package changes for CAM5.5, the assessment panel has now made their final recommendation final recommendation to the SSC regarding the path forward for AMWG and CESM2.

This recommendation was based on updated supporting material provided by the developers of CLUBB and UNICON in response to the first panel recommendation.

The AMWG co-chairs and chief scientist would again like to extend our sincere thanks to all the panel members for devoting time to this valuable process.

Please send any comments or questions to the AMWG co-chairs:
    Christiane Jablonowski
    Rich Neale

We would like to welcome Christiane Jablonowski of the University of Michigan as the new AMWG co-chair. http://aoss.engin.umich.edu/people/cjablono

Christiane is head of the Atmosphere Dynamics Modeling Group and has an impressive research resume with interests including dynamical cores, climate variability and high-performance computing. Christiane has been an active member of the AMWG for many years and will be a great addition. Welcome Christiane.

    Many thanks

    Rich Neale, AMWG co-chair
    Minghua Zhang, AMWG co-chair

November 2014

  • AMWG new co-chair nominations

After many years of guidance of AMWG modeling activities Mark Taylor of Sandia has recently stepped down as an AMWG co-chair. Thanks Mark for all you effort and wisdom over these last few years!

Having three chairs for the large AMWG has seemed to work so we are are therefore seeking nominations for a new co-chair for the AMWG. There are no requirements other than a significant involvement in CESM activities and an enthusiasm for atmosphere model development. Initial terms are for two years, beginning as soon as a nomination is approved.

If you wish to nominate someone in the community (even yourself!) please reply to this email with their name and a quick line or two of why they would be a good candidate. Based on these candidates a recommendation will be made to Jean-Francois and the CESM SSC for approval. We will let you know the outcome as soon as possible.

    Many thanks!

    AMWG co-chairs
    Rich Neale, NCAR
    Minghua Zhang, Stony Brook

  • AMWG Winter Meeting Dates: NCAR, Feb 18-20th, 2015

The dates for this Winter's AMWG meeting will be February 18th-20th (Wed-Fri), 2015 at the NCAR Mesa Lab. Pleases save the dates in your calendar. The main topic for this meeting is expected to be the candidate model configuration for CAM5.5. The current timeline is for CAM5.5 to be made available for coupling to other model components in June 2015 in order for the working groups to run simulations ready for CMIP6 and the release of CESM2 in 2016.

Currently the most likely candidates for CAM5.5 are the CLUBB scheme (replacing the large-scale clouds, shallow convection and boundary layer schemes) and the Morrison Gettelman v2 (MG2) microphysics scheme (replacing the MG1 scheme). These are fundamental changes to the physical parameterizations and a comprehensive evaluation of climate performance is ongoing. We invite you to participate by visiting the CAM development webpage to view simulations and provide any feedback you may have to the co-chairs.
